Thread the needle in cotton thread. Come up from the back of the fabric, and pull tight. Holding the cotton in your left hand, wrap the needle around the cotton 4 times. Keeping the left hand tight, put the needle (with cotton wrapped around it) back into the fabric close to where the thread came up from. Keep your left hand tight until it is closer to the fabric again. There you go, a French knot!
